Cadmium     Passivate     Chromate     Passivate on Stainless Steel During processing operations such as forming, machining, tumbling and lapping, iron particles or other particles may become smeared over or imbedded into the surface of stainless steel parts. These particles must be removed or they will appear as rust to stain spots. Passivating the parts, which will dissolve the particles and allow a thin transparent passive film to form over the restored surface, may prevent this condition.
